Languages

Language has a vital role to play in children's development at Scoil Iósaif Naofa. Much learning takes place through the interaction of language and experience. Language helps the child to clarify and interpret experience, to acquire new concepts, and to add depth to concepts already grasped. In view of this crucial relationship between language and learning the curriculum incorporates the use of talk and discussion as a central learning strategy in every curriculum area. This facilitates the exploration of ideas, emotions and reactions through increasingly complex language, thus deepening the child's understanding of the world.

In Scoil Iósaif Naofa, the boys are taught through the medium of English. Gaeilge is also taught throughout all of our classes. It is a particular feature of Irish primary education that children, from the beginning of schooling, have an experience of language learning in two languages.

The boys have recently undertaken study of French as part of broadening their experiences of languages.

The school actively encourages the promotion of Gaeilge and prepares the boys for the annual Oranmore Maree Feis which takes place every year at Seachtain na Gaeilge (early March). Glacann na buachaillí páirt i gcomórtais chomhrá, amhránaoíchta, fhilíochta agus cheoil agus is minic a bhíonn an bua acu.
